Another Cautioanary tale

NI3 is a lot more sensitive after 42 hours of drying than 24. I recently made about 8g of the stuff and let it dry for 24 hours. After testing it i was unimpressed with it's sensitivity, so i put it away. About a day later I thought of putting it between two coins, I just brushed it with a spoon and the whole lot went off in my face.

Please kiddies, wear glasses - I could well be blind (i have only bloodshot eyes w/ iodine burns to show for it), work outside, and if handling things like this, wear ear-muffs too (my ears were still ringing in the morning). Just thought I'd post this for general safety.

Before experimenting "Cool" things (read stupid), better ask here what to expect!
I have had many experiences with NH3NI3 and none went bad because I knew the compound and its properties long before making it!
You should have tought what would happen to the coins if a detonation occurs?
A simple manipulation of a tiny cristal would have informed you of the danger!

Always ask you what would happen if spontaneous detonation occurs?
Can it make material damage?
Can it injure someone (me included)?
Do I have sufficient protection?
Isn't the amount too big?
Glass/metal container or plastic one?
(Go soft plastic believe me...think schrapnells).

I think shrapnell would have been deliberate.

Let us say that the use of "cloudy ammonia" yeilds a product comparable to pure ammonia, but only after 48 hours of drying. How was I supposed to know.

I suppose what you said is fair enough *slaps hand*.
