DCM/HNO3 separation


After doing solvent extraction of HNO3 by methylene chloride, I've read the easiest way to separate is to freeze out the HNO3. Since I've no access to dry ice, I'm wondering if when distilling off the methylene chloride, reducing pressure will improve separation.

There was a HUGE amount of discussion over at RS about this method. As I remember, the DCM simply be distilled off.

Well, that still doesn't answer my question. Will reducing pressure improve separation?

Look up the boiling points of HNO3 and DMC at 1 bar and some reduced pressure. If the low pressure boiling points are further apart that at standard pressure, then it will probably help. If the boiling points are closer together, then I'd guess that it will hurt the separation. (or vapour pressures at two different temperatures)
