Just wanted to say THANKS for everyone's exceptional help here!!!

After a little bit of a rough start (being accused of possibly being a troll or some othe r$hit by aga - but I see where he may have thought that) I want to sincerely thank everyone for their generous help they have provided in this forum and in helping me to much better understand how things work, where my mistakes are/were and how to better look at things.

All in all, I think this forum is excellent for the most part and I think "we" (all members/users) should do something to say thanks to the staff and contributing members for their hard work and generosity to the forums members.

After all us bees lost our home a long time ago it took some of us forever before we found other places where we felt was safe and legit (and fit in).

I think we should have some kind of site mirroring w/ FTP and torrent features to backup the site in case something should happen. There is too much here that too many people have spent hard work, sweats and tears (or is that SWEETS and BEERS....:P).

I know there is "the way back machine" but that is run by god only knows, so I don't trust it.

I'm good at organizing a continuous backup of something like this board and would be happy to do so if anyone would want it.

Hosting can be done on a number of servers across the globe as well as a distributed network of 2nd, 3rd and 4th tier backups not including torrents. It is simple and can be had for almost nothing (unless there are terabytes of chemporn on this site that is hidden..)

If anyone is interested in this and especially if you have a web hosting package, high speed internet (preferable unlimited bandwidth) or other means of hosting, please contact me. We can even make use of free services that allow for file storage to host much of the data or spread it out over many accounts.

Is anyone interested in this?

With your superpowers you'll already realise that you can grab all of the relevant parts of the entire Public site (i.e. not Whimsy etc) with a simple wget command using spider mode if you have the disk space.

It's not a bad idea, however the point at which SM is switched off is the point where we'll all be wishing we paid more attention, followed the maths, replicated (and documented) the syntheses, and basically Learnt more.

The current staff and policies seem to be keeping SM healthy and far enough away from the Line where it might get stamped on, so i'd be mightily surprised if it went off due to Authorities' actions.

Polverone might get really bored with the tons of shit passing through his site, so i'd say that would be a more credible reason for SM to get switched off.

I'm not sure what level of expertise you have with regards to copying a site with a client side script which doesn't return authentic server queries (php, asp, .net - to name a few). While the threads can be saved the organization is often worse than taking a 3D jugsaw puzzle and putting it through a wood chipper. You might end up with all the contnet but making coherent sense of them isn't quite as simple.

If anyone knows how to download a forum (especially a php based like vBulletin or phpbb) so that it can be browsed and searched, that would be excellent!! U2U me if you know. Thanks!

Polverone posts backups of the site periodically for whoever wishes to download. That's if I understand the technical bits correctly.

Yes there is, http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=12051 Polverone isn't on terribly often, but I've worked with the backup quite a bit. It can be finicky to set up, so feel free to shoot me a U2U if you're having issues. I've also got a folder on my hard drive containing every post as plain text up to about a year ago, so if anyone wants that just let me know.

Polverone is here quite a lot IMHO.

Certainly 'present'. Definitely not 'past' or 'disinterested'.

Good to see that people are backing-up this site, as RogueRose can also easily do now, thanks to gdflp's pointer.

A lot of the contents of SM are certainly worth saving in perpetuity.

Edit:

No, i do NOT mean any of mine.

@aga

drunks, rednecks, roscoes, et al add what is referred to as "color", therefore we ARE an integral part. ;)
