Polysulfides

I know there was a topic on this awhile ago, but I figured I would start a new one since I couldn't find it. I recently did an experiment to produce ammonium polysulfide. I held a mixture of household ammonium under reflux with about 10 grams of sulfur, I forgot to measure to amount of ammonium used in the system. I used a vacuum adapter with a PE tube hooked to it to lead the exes ammonium, and H2S produced during the reaction outside. Here is a photo of the apparatus:

The mixture was held under reflux for about 2 hours. After which time most of the sulfur had dissolved. Here are some photos of the reactions progression:

After this period of time I let the system cool for about an hour. I the used an air compressor to purge any execs gasses out of the system. Here is a photo of the setup while being purged:

The finished solution was a dark purplish red color. Here is a photo of the finished product:

I am now trying to find a way to stabiles the mix because overnight almost all the sulfur precipitated out of solution, and the color of the mix turned from a lovely purple red to a bright piss yellow. I hope to experiment with Sodium polysulfide in my next experiment.

P.S. sorry about the crummy pictures, I geuss that’s what I get for buying a cheap digitale camera.

P.S.S You may have to copy and paste the photographs due to the fact that angelfire sucks.

P.S.S.S. for some reason haklf of the post is in bold and I dont know why.

The old thread was actually on sodium polysulfide: http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=3

I weep at the sight of flaming acetic anhydride.

I read through the old thread and it seems fairly easy as reactions come and go.Largest application of this seems to be in the realm of toxic chemicals(think abotu ti sulfer based V agents are nastier han flourine based G agents-you get the picture).

Would using a nitride base create a pulysulfer nitride or would the nitriding have to be done later? If it can it would sure as hell open up some nice magnets :D

Edit:Turns out I was sadly mistaken as polysulfer nitride wont be superconductive without liquid helium(critical tempereture of .34K).Rather stick to YBCO.
