I did the esterification described in the above link and precipitated benzocaine using sodium carbonate. Recrystallised and tested mp. A couple of
posters in that thread discussed making the hydrochloride salt and I would like to attempt this.
I tried to gas a suspension of my prepared benzocaine (its very poorly soluble in ethanol and methanol) with no result. I guess I could strip the
ethanol after the esterification, vacuum distill the benzocaine freebase and then treat it with HCL but I would prefer to avoid this. Any ideas on the
best method for forming the HCL salt?
