Test Site Participation

Melgar has been working his butt off trying to get the bugs out of our new board. I see NO PARTICIPATION by members. Get over there and try to break it. What is needed.

I spend quite some time trying to find published security flaws online, but everytime some bug is found there is a patch available quickly... This forum software is well maintained and under active development. I wouldn't know where to start in trying to brake it. I guess if the forum transfer is done well and nothing is lost it is good to go.

Do we have to re-register (and therefore reset) our accounts on the new forum or can we just log in by transferring our current stats to the new forum? I don't want to make any redundant accounts.

I'm excited to see some initiative being taken! :D

The test site uses a version of the database from June 2016 with all non-public forums wiped, all private messages wiped, and all user passwords changed to "reader". So if you registered after June 2016, you'll have to re-register, otherwise log in with the default password and change it. Note that this version of the site database will eventually be replaced with the live one, so anything posted to the test site now will eventually be removed. I don't know for sure how that will happen, and will need to coordinate with Polverone.

I've been spending time with my family this past week, and haven't been online much.

It seems to be fairly resistant to being broken, but it would be nice to have some feedback as far as what people think of it, and if there's anything they'd like to have added or changed. Presumably, there will be a period of time when both sites exist, which we can use to make sure everything was transferred properly.

Can we also make sure that there is a backup for data preservation
A final backup of the site would be great.

Yes, although that's something Polverone would have to do. But I can't imagine he wouldn't do it, since he's been very adamant that everything that can be preserved should be.

Wow, good to see this!
With this new forum software we could make really good progress to a better user experience.
I think some minor tweaking (e.g. color scheme, layout and other minor things) may be needed, but basically, this looks great and as far as I am concerned we move to it as soon as possible.
We, however, need Polverone's coordination to make this move possible.

While we're bumping...

I installed MathJax, like this site has. It lets you enter inline LaTeX markup. However, with the new test site, the mhchem plugin for MathJax is also installed, which includes a whole bunch of chemistry-specific functionality. To use it, you need to enter:

Code:
\(\ce{SO3 + H2O -> H2SO4}\)

But now there's bbcode that keeps track of those symbols for you, so all you have to enter is:

Code:
[ce]SO3 + H2O -> H2SO4[/ce]

Also, there's another feature that uses PubChem's chemical identification database to fetch molecular diagram images. So you can put pretty much any string that can be used to identify a chemical between the [mol] and [/mol] tags, and you'll get an image of it. Examples:

Code:
[mol]THC[/mol] [mol]ATP[/mol] [mol]77-83-8[/mol] [mol]caproic anhydride[/mol]

I started to set up an FTP server that would use phpBB login information and upload the files to cloud storage, but I halted that project until I know whether to expect to have access to cloud storage on the production server. Ultimately, that would be Polverone's decision, so better to not jump the gun.

Anyone have any thoughts or feedback on any of that?

Maybe do something to incorporate the "flaming O" logo into the new design but revamp it into a more stylized version.

I happen to like the fluorescent green motif myself. Like green slime.

I'm not worrying about the style right now, since I'm more of a backend developer. There are a few themes installed now though, and users can switch between them if they want. And if anyone has a phpBB 3.2 theme/style that they'd like to apply to the boards to see how it looks, I'm open to suggestions. I'm glad you like that style though!

When you start making visual changes to the layout, then all of a sudden everyone has an opinion on what color to paint the bikeshed. So it's better to save that part for last.

Don't mind if the bikeshed is red, blue, or green - but please make sure the tacked/sticky/pinned thread icon is actually distinguishable from the normal kind without needing a magnifying glass. :D

We need 2 contrasting colours of background vs pinning icon for each theme?

Do we need any color? I find your color thing annoying.

No one in my time thought it was necessary to use colors and I don't think you made it obvious it was necessary to do so.

Also your font thing is annoying. If you want to express yourself, do it through comments that actually mean something.

Number of comments means shit. I think this has been told to you before

You misunderstood me. I mean the colour for the small icons in front of the pinned thread titles.

Bump!

Speaking of passwords...It says I already have an account, yet this is the first time I'm seeing this site...And I tried all of the forgot password options, but it doesn't recognize any of my passwords nor emails...

Okay for some reason all the different sub forums of the test site are restricted content on apple products with restrictions enabled.

A positive side effect of the spam barrage has been that old & obscure threads, including some I don't think I'd seen before, have been churned to the front page and gotten new exposure. Maybe this could be a feature, like a grab bag of three random threads at the bottom of "today's posts".

So when would this go from a test site to the actual site? Is there an actual plan? Is Polverone on board with this?

I would appreciate if users as myself who joined in early 2018 could join without re registering, but I understand the reasoning.
