Manganese dioxide- make or buy?

I was thinking of using Manganese dioxide in a reaction, however I heard that it needs to be "activated" and other forms can exit depending on how its made.

I would like to buy just plain Manganese dioxide from a reputable vendor but I dont know if its qualified as being "active".

I read a method of making gamma-Manganese dioxide from Manganese sulphate monohydrate.

Does anyone know if I can just buy regular or if I have to make it?

thanks

just rip apart a dry cell battery. Then rinse the black powder with water to remove electrolyte. Seems to work well for me...i don't know what you intend it for, but my manganese dioxide seems to decompose H2O2 pretty well.

MnO2 from Batteries is only MnO2 when fresh Batteries are used; else it is MnOx (Mn2O3, Mn3O4).
Not only has to be washed, but also the graphite-powder within it might have to be removed (before heating with oxidizers eg.)

There are numerous threads here on MnO2, including a detailed and excellent procedure for extracting it from battery crud written by DerAlte and this recent one started by moi.

For a simple binary compound, MnO2 sure causes quite a few headaches.

@chemchemical: what is the intended use of the product in your case?

I was going to use it to oxidize a hyroxy to ketone.

I read the other threads but it was about obtaining it, I just want to know if to do this reaction I need to make it because its somehow "activated" that way?

Edit: The thing that confused me that most was the procedure said they added MnO2 which wsa freshly prepared, but I don't know if it needs to be fresh.

I also don't understand the gamma-MnO2, are there different forms or something?

Preparation of gamma-Manganese Dioxide

Manganese (II) sulphate monohydrate (140 g) was dissolved in 2.66 liters of water and heated to 60°C. Potassium permanganate (97.3 g) in 1.85 liter of water was added over a period of 15 minutes and stirred at 60°C for 1 hour, until manganese dioxide precipitated out. The reaction mixture was filtered and the residue was washed with deionised water until no sulphate ion was present. The solid was dried under suction for 2 hours followed by drying at 70°C under vacuum to a constant weight (about 8 days) to give 115 g of a dark brown powder.

@chemchemical: 2 Things, no 3.
1, SciMadness is "non drug" chemistry site
2, If you need to ask that question, you shouldn't be trying to convert codeine to anything in the first place
3, RHODIUM's site is not without error, some reactions have incorrect quantaties of a material to name one
.
just try a glass of water with 2 pills min 4 hrs apart, max 4 x a day :)

Wasn't sure if this question was worth a new thread, so im adding it on to this.

Is cement dye that hard to come by?, or like me, the use of a new/used battery a part of the "now what can I extract from that, turn it into & how" way you view ordinary household stuff? MM

Why? If you wanted to know about making MnO2 from battery crud, DerAlte provided a good recipe.

'Manganese chloride crystals'.

@ everyone. Apologies, I didn't notice the date when I posted and wasn't trying to revive a done to death question.
I just popped a question on the end of it that didn't matter, thinking it would proberbly get sent to the D bin anyway.
i'll pay more attention next time. MM
