Phenolic antioxidants

BHA and TBHQ look like they might be synthetically-interesting starting materials for the amateur chemist. They are used as antioxidants in the food and cosmetics industry.

But all my attempts to track down a supplier of kilogram quantities have run aground on Hong-Kong based search engines.

Does anybody know of an industrial-grade supplier of 1 kg quantity?

I have some interest in these compounds. They (at least TBHQ) are added to cooking oils used by resteraunts. And we at the biofuels lab on campus think it's probably what makes our waste glycerin red, although I'm about to (a few days) start testing to be sure. If the reseult are interesting I'll post 'em, as it could be cool to see what derivatives form under conditions of heat + KOH + methanol. I'm thinking the hydroxyls would be replaced with methoxy groups, but maybe some other junk would occur given the conditions. Heck, it could form an ester with the fatty acids.

Not sure what exactly one would use them for in home chemistry though.

Lemme guess. 2,5-dimethoxy-4-tert-butylphenethylamine.

Did I guess right? No? Perhaps the amphetamine or methamphetamine variants in that case.

And if I'm right, it is *mighty* interesting that you're looking for a whole kilo of the stuff.

How many times do you need to be slapped down for jumping to conclusions before you stop?

If you mean, are they precursors for anything famous then I don't know, but I doubt it.

Otherwise that is a silly question. Just look at an organic textbook for reactions of phenols.

I have no personal experience, but pretending that I was a junk food manufacturer, I came up with Food Additives (ThomasNet) and Food Additive and Preservative Distributors (Business.com), for example. Here's one distributor I pulled up first: BHA, Flakes, FCC (Spectrum) $126.35 / 500 g.

I don't think its such a silly question.Perhaps could be rephrased to "what do you plan to use it for?"

That question is not silly, it is impertinent. You'll know what I do with it when I publish, and then you can comment. Otherwise, do your own research.

Food grade is usually fairly expensive, better might be the grades for adding to non-food oils and plastics. Searching Thomas for 'antioxidants' got 87 hits, though many are pharam suppliers there some that are not such as :
http://www.wegochem.com/en/products/petroleum-additives/

I hope you want a 180 kg drum of 2,6-DTBP

Whoah, thanks NI. There are lots of really exotic phenolic antioxidants there. As you point out, the trouble is in getting the supplier to part with quantities as small as a kg.

Thread split? not to anywhere I can find.

I wanted to mention figging. ... not pertinent to the thread topic, I know.
