The only ref I have is a side comment in a piece about graphite fluorides (also electrolytic products). It doesn't give details.
As I understood it the reaction carried on without the current. That means the system had stored some energy, otherwise the reaction would have stopped as soon as the current did.
One possible means of storing the energy would be the production of graphitic oxide.
Of course, there are lots of other possible high energy compounds it could have been.
