Ferric Ammonium Citrate


Hi All

Is ferric ammonium citrate light senstive in crystal form? If so must it be stored is a black bottle?

Correct. Light transfers an electron from the citrate to the iron, reducing it to ferrous state. It is slower in dry form than in water solution, but it does happen.

The creation of reactive ferrous iron in this manner is the basis of the reaction with potassium hexacyanoferrate, to produce Prussian Blue. It is this light sensitivity that makes blueprints possible.
