You won't get very far in chemistry with that attitude.
You should check out photographic supplies, or get some nitromethane and make it, the only other thing needed is sulfuric acid. It is a simple prep and info can be found on this forum. Hms beagle currently has hydroxylamine hydrochloride.

Hydroxylamine HCl is apparently easy to synthesize in reasonable yield from nitromethane (from RC racing fuel) and hydrochloric acid.

But do not see how it could me done by nitromethane and sulfuric acid...

Not to bloat but please use the search engine on this forum, even google gave a hit as second. Know you asked for cheapest source to buy, but at 1/10 of the cost you could make it yourself and gain some first hand experience, priceless if you ask me.

Wish I had time to make the stuff I sometimes want...

The method with sulfuric acid will give the sulfate, I should have included that part of info.. Anyway it can be converted to the hydrochloride.

The synthesis looks easy enough. Defiantly something I'll try sometime.

CH3NO2 is quite expensive where I live, so I'll by some Hydroxylamine hydrochloride this time and make it another time

mewrox did you look for the CH3NO2 in a hobby model shop? I recently went into such a shop in W Australia and saw 1l bottles of red CH3NO2 for $20 Au. It said that it was 99% on the label. I guess the red colouration is a dye.

Wiki has just informed me that model engine fuel is rarely over 30%. I will have to go back and reread that label.

That would be one good find if they were selling CH3NO2 for $20AUD for the litre. The best price I've found is around $32 per the litre here in Australia. You can request to buy just pure nitromethane and most shops will happily sell it to you. It's generally not common for people to buy just nitromethane so I would definitely check that label again as most hobby stores happily make up the fuel for you so it would just be an extra effort to do it at home.

yes the pink colour is dye and its quite thick too i have noticed

ask round RC shops man last lot i had to get was 40% all they had in stock, but ya 99% is the go. Most could order it for you :), my fav rc shop does a lot of the professional RC racing boats and cars, the lower market RC shops round here only stock 15% ta 25% (bit of a waste o time and cash *my opinion*)

distilation of the 99% to drop the pink dye and ya laughing, piss easy to distill

just bring the temp up slowly and dont distill the flask dry

have fun

take care

You dont need nitromethane. The preparation in Brauer uses readily available materials and there are practical writeups following a similar procedure on forums like Versuchschemie, with pictures.

I do not see how the prep in Brauer is better than a simple reflux. The writeup on versuchschemie is nitromethane and HCl, and with the price of 32 bucks a liter or whatever it is, which seems a damn good price compared to what I get it for, it is the most practical and OTC way unless you have mercury salts, electrolysis equipment and lead sheet. Of course whoever is planning to make hydroxylamine would search and use the most practical method for them, so it's good to have options.
Anyway happy new year everyone :D

I didn't say its "better than a simple reflux", just that it might be more accessible. You're right about the post on Versuchschemie, but there is a prep of Fremy's salt (http://www.versuchschemie.de/htopic,9761,nitrosodisulfonat.h...) which is used as the starting material in the Brauer prep if memory serves. Alternatively, theres a prep of hydroxylamine hydrochloride on Illumina using SO2 gas for the reduction of nitrite. Both syntheses are not particularly complicated, and avoid nitromethane which many people cannot get as a pure material.

also the stuff for r/c engines has lubricating oil in it. quite a lot. when breaking in a new helicopter engine, the red dyed(i believe it was 40%) i burned off about a 4 ounce tank and it left behind at least 2 tsp. of oil not including what burned and what stayed in the engine and exhaust system.

ya looking at my bottle of 40% it is as follows

420 ml/L nitromethane
400 ml/L methanol
130 ml/L synthetic oil
50 ml/L castor oil

DJF90 is right what is accessable for 1 mad scientist may not be for the next :)

i use nitro cause it is easy for me to aquire same as sulfuric, but its not the only way sorry to make it sound like nitro was the only path

take care
