Cerium pyrophoricity

Hi.

I am thinking about buying some cerium metal. I read some time ago that cerium is pyrophoric. I suppose that only in form of dust, but I am not sure about that. Have you some experiences with storing cerium metal?

In finely divided form, it's pyrophoric. See this page for behavior in bulk form:

Under argon or mineral oil, it should present no significant problems.

Ferrocerium rods contain a large percent of cerium, and those don't catch fire spontaneously. You will be fine.

Hi.

I finally have cerium metal :D. I bought it along with Mo and Mg powders. Seller send it in plastic vial with mineral oil. 3g of Ce costs 117Kč (4,25€).

For CZ members: I bought these metals here. This seller mainly sell elements - for hobby chemists and also for element collectors. He also sells some chemical compounds and other useful stuff.

I've had Cerium lumps. It oxidizes fast and disintegrates as a powder.
Never tried to use it in a composition and see if there was metal left or just the oxide.

Storing in oil seems smart.

Bedlasky - do you need Ce metal, couldn't you use its oxide which is much more cheaper?
I visited the eshop you mentioned few times already but always found cheaper sellers, especially from Poland where no problem of buying few kg which were on stock and shipped immediately.
