DIY GC column

Does anybody tried to pack own GC column? I'm thinking about using diatomaceous earth as carrier for stationary phase and alkyl benzyl phtalate as stationary phase.

Any tips or warnings? How much stationary phase i should use? 5%?
Phtalate looks good, it's cheap, can resist high temperature and has intermediate polarity(i would like to have an general purpose column, that's why i'm thinking about intermediate polarity)
I'm not sure about length of column any tips how to choose best length?

You might want to look at the existing threads.
There are books mentioned in those threads that will probably help.
