Purification of phenelzine

I followed a patent to make phenelzine from 2-phenethylamine via acetone azine. In the reaction, I used 2-phenethylamine hydrochloride and theoretically produced 2-phenethylhydrazine hydrochloride. I stopped the reaction early, so I had a mix of the two.

The only reasons I know that I produced something besides the 2-phenethylamine are both because it has a very noticeable smell (unpleasantly sweet and flowery), and I tested its reducing capabilities: Upon adding a small amount of the product an acidified potassium permanganate solution and letting it sit for a minute, the color changed to a red. Adding a small amount of pure 2-phenethylamine hydrochloride to the solution resulted in no color change after sitting for 5 minutes.

There's so little information about the non-sulfate forms of phenelzine that I still don't know if the freebase is a solid or a liquid. So, if you have any information regarding phenelzine or how I can separate the two, please let me know.
