Maglev separation and paramagnetic solutions
Hello all, I haven't been here in years, SWIM had an accident with a certain Pb containing primary while trying in a distressed state of mind to
dispose of it, nearly lost his vision, but fully healed.
He doesn't play with such things anymore, too much 1984 tech in the world, knowing it could be energized from a great distance at any moment is a but
much for him, was probably just his bad luck.
I was looking into something I found completely by chance, and became very interested. This is amazing, like the holy grail of purification, it
allegedly can even separate stereo optical isomers.

So I've learned that gadolinium and manganese salts are paramagnetic or slightly attracted to magnets. In the study, gadolinium chelate is
apparently used in a hexane and tetrachloroethylene solvent mix. I'm trying to understand if the paramagnetic compund, in the above example, the
gadolinium chelate is dissolved in a nonpolar solvent or simply a finely powdered suspension.
I wish to use more readily available manganese salts like the nitrate, chloride and sulfate. If i wish to separate out water soluble compounds as in
the above links, how would I utilize the maganese salts. I would need a nonpolar solvent like naphtha or tetrachloroethylene. However, I'm pretty
sure the maganese salts will not dissolve in that, I'm pretty sure the paramagnetic substance can't be a suspension because it would just clump or be
attracted to the magnets. Do I need to create some maganese compound or chelate which dissolves in a nonpolar? Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?

Ok I found my answers, you must use a hydrophobic paramagnetic chelate of gadolinium which will dissolve in nonpolar solvents, if you wanted to be
able to separate water soluble powders, or separate optical isomers. Seems like a fun project if your bucket list includes knowing you experienced
the purest booger sugar. Here's the supporting info:

Sounds like a lot of effort for good cocaine.
And do you really think

easy to achieve 98% pure?
Like WOW!... that extra 1.9% is really kicking my ass? If you want 1.9% more intoxication out of a line of coke you can probably get that by picking
your nose thoroughly before you snort (waxing your nose hairs may help too, but ouch.)
BTW: I've never had any accidents with lead azide.
You must be thinking of someone who isn't me.

A while back you started a conversation about lead azide (shortly after one about acetone peroxide, very classy)and talked about "potassium possibly
having a higher affinitiy for azide" than lead; The most basic understanding of double replacement reactions and solubility isn't even there. Are you
actually going to attempt magnetic levitation using rare earths to separate stereoisomers? No. No one here is.

I was intrigued by the tetrameric form, which that mysterious research paper mentioned. Everyone gave up, so either the paper was bull, a psyop or
nobody else could get it right.
I only learn enough about various subjects to accomplish my goals, pursuit of happiness and quench my curiosity. I really should take the time to
really understand chemistry, I have a basic understanding, enough to accomplish what I wanted to, and I've had a blast over the years.
I'm not trying to purify cocaine I was kidding, I think this would be an awesome tool to have around, you can't tell me this isn't great, for a bunch
of chemistry buffs, you would think they would find it worth noting.

This technology may end up being very useful for analyzing street drug samples, which tend to be mixtures of a few different compounds ( the active
ingredient and maybe a couple to diluents, or even some other drug for an extra kick or to control some side effect like diphenhydramine in opiates.).
However in chemistry you're often trying to separate the wanted compound from a bunch of nonspecific junk.
This may be a poor application for this technology, especially since the impurities are often locked in impure crystals of the target compound.
This is a very different situation from drugs which were made by mixing or grinding a few relatively pure chemicals together.
