Is this Nitrocellulose?
I only nitrated it for 1 hour, so I know it won't be quite as energetic as some that have nitrated for longer. It burned suprisingly well, but it did
take a while for it to burn completely down, which is kind of unlike nitrocellulose. It had a flame that kind of looked like when you burn ethanol. In
all it took about 10 seconds for it to burn completely.

It looks like common cotton to me; it was probably only slightly nitrated. Did you test your products? Nitrocellulose is soluble in (1) ether:ethanol
and (2) acetone. Put a piece of the supposed nitrocellulose together with one of the solvents in a test tube, leave it alone for a while, then
transfer the liquid to a glass dish or plate. If there is nitrocellulose, it will form a film--you'll see a residue--in the glass.

What are you using to nitrate it?

Guncotton is only in Ethylacetat and Aceton soluble, Celloid is in Alccohol soluble.
Dont use Na2CO3 for neutralisation it can remove the nitrate ions from the cotton only NaHCO3 its not so alkalien. Do nitrate for 2 Hours and under
30C.(mix the acids an day before in an glass container with lid)
If you have Guncotton and you would lithe an ball of this size you would lose your eyes very small pice makes an purpel fireball and you can feel the
heat wave. if you have Celloid it burns with and yellow flame and more like an welding flame.
You can it test an an withe ceramic dish if ignited guncotton there is no remains. if you have celloid there are carbon remains (little bit) if your
cotton wasnt clean enough there is an yellow spot on the dish.
Maybe your acid mix was to weak 55% nitric acid 1 part on 96% H2SO4 2,8 parts (on mass) or 1 to 2 on Volume. It works i testet it. ps if you add 20%
more sulfuric acid doesnt hurt less isnt good. Source: Handbuch der Pulverfabrikation sowie der Schiessbaumwolle und der Schiessheede.

Bnull, ah should have done that.
Sir_Gawain, I was using 90% Nitric Acid + Conc. Sulfuric Acid.
Alkoholvergiftung, thanks!

If you have acid from 1,42 desteny (concentratet) you need only 1 part nitric on 1,6 part sulfuric acid on Volume or 1 part nitric an 2,16 part H2SO4
on wight.

Oops. The solubility of nitrocellulose depends on the degree of nitration. With 8-12% nitrogen, it is called collodion and is soluble in
ether:ethanol; with more than 13% nitrogen, it is called guncotton and is insoluble in ether:ethanol. But both collodion and guncotton are soluble in
acetone (https://archive.org/details/bigbanghistoryof00brow/page/131/...). Thanks for reminding me of the distinction, @Alkoholvergiftung.
