Tetracene and rubrene synthesis.

Hello everyone.

I did a little research on organic semiconductors, and I found two substances that are great organic semiconductors, tetracene, and rubrene. Both of these chemicals are quite expensive, so I was wondering if they can be made in small amounts in the lab.
Any ideas?

The synthesis of rubrene is very difficult and expensive, i think that you will save a lot of money if you buy rubrene
How much rubrene do you need? I've got 100mg and I've payed about 35$

It's possible to make rubrene, but i suggest not making tetracene as it will all oxidize rather quickly.

To make rubrene you'll need propagaryl alcohol pH-=-C(OH)(pH)2

React it with tosyl chloride and triethylamine, then gently warm and stir it. There's a patent out there somewhere.

I'm an undergrad trying this out, however i'm currently just making the propagaryl alcohol.

I'm going to prepare Rubrene as my attempt to make interesting chemioluminescent dyes and I think it's very fulthfilling synthesis, I wouldn't call it that expensive certainly it's cheaper than buying it.
However if you want high purity it's better to buy it because if you don't have strong vacuum pump you might won't have crystalline product at all.
Actually one guy on german forum tried it per Vogel:

Thanks for the info, I'll definately look further into this.
The propargyl alcohol, triethylamine and tosyl chloride approach sounds like a cheap way to make rubrene, although I'm sure there's a catch somewhere.
