That's an interesting offer, but I'm reluctant to send money to a gmail account by paypal, to a guy with a history of 1 post, even if he says he's a member in good standing with 'the gold board'. I suggest caution and verification.

Its just like eBay. If you get ripped off with paypal you can dispute it and hopefully get your money back. Also your credit card can cancel the transaction. Visa is very protective, only they are allowed to steal from you.

Nows your chance to get some Os and Ir

The price is a little steep considering that they can be had elsewhere for less.

Neptunium refers to:

http://elementsales.com/pl_element.htm#ir

I don't have the money for this right now, but otherwise I might be interested.

If your collecting elements chips are fine.
These are a fine mesh powder which is more flexible to melt as well as if you want to dissolve. But Im game.
$150 Shipped. Rock bottom.

And I trust you know the hazards of handling finely powdered osmium, Mr. Wizard. That's not something you should play with. ;)

Thank you for mentioning it to me.

I did know, and have not even opened the sealed jar to look at the material. From what I understand, the finely divided powder will oxidize in air releasing a volatile, odorous, toxic oxide. The material inside is still solid from the feeling it makes when the container is shaken, and there is no smell. My hope is the material is not finely divided.

Are there any other things I should know about this exotic sample? It is extreme in density, oxidation states, hardness, and in scarcity.

It will be stored in a double container.

osmium tetraoxide is very dangerous , if you inhale some, the tetraoxide will go in your blood and finaly in the cells , it will be reduce to osmium metal shard which will kill many cells , osmium is realy inert so I suppose there is no antidote for this pain.

I never asked for this.

It is also well known for causing damage to the cornea, with large exposure eventually leading to blindness. Read the Wikipedia article. Insidious stuff. Very useful if you plan to do electron microscopy, however.

I recently decided not to order osmium powder, partly due to the oxidation to the nasty tetroxide, but also because it is relatively easy to form osmium VIII in solution. Ruthenium tetroxide is also nasty but only forms under very specific conditions so it is easier to avoid. I'm happy to leave osmium alone depite it being the only PGM I don't have access to.

I have ordered Ruthenium, Rhodium, Rhenium and Iridium metal powders from these people over the years and have always had good experience (Great packaging, delivery and customer service) http://www.element-collection.com/

They charged me about £32/gram for iridium and £72/gram for rhodium. I tested the rhodium by fusing a little with sodium bisulfate and obtained the deep red sulfato complex. I added water to this and got the yellow aqua ion [Rh(H2O)6]3+ so certainly rhodium sponge is a viable entry point into rhodium chemistry (and a lot cheaper that rhodium chloride!).

Please let me know if you manage to get the iridium into solution. Fusing with sodium chloride at 840C is a bit extreme for me.

Being probably the only person here still posting who has worked with osmium on a frequent basis, I can say that osmium sponge isn't that bad. It doesn't even have too much of a stink unless it is very finely ground or black. The sponge is relatively tame.

If people really want to buy Os and Ir, I'd be glad to sell:

current market+5 per ounce for Pt, Pd, Ir, Ru, Rh, Os, Au
If you want their salts, ask me. I keep most of the simple halides in stock.

market + $0.90/ozt for Ag. All are 99,95 minimum and will come with assay sheet.

Thanks.

Neither flask nor beaker.

Just to say I bought some PGM salts from Fleaker and was impressed with the price and the service. He's a trustworthy source for these rare metals.

Thanks again,
Simon.
