A possible Synthesis Route to Acetylene
I read somewhere(don't know where) that metallic lithium, on heating with carbon forms Lithium Carbide. It goes by the equation :-
2Li + 2C => 2Li2C2
On hydrolysis, isolation of acetylene is possible :-
2Li2C2 + 2H2O => 2C2H2 + 2Li2O
The so formed Li2O instantly reacts with water to form it's hydroxide :-
2Li2O + 2H2O => 4LiOH
My question to all you is-
Are the following reactions possible?
The reaction between lithium and carbon, if possible, what type of carbon is to be used?I believe that heating is necessary to achieve success. Will
the yields be high?

For this process you need an electric arc . Why dont you just buy calcium carbide . It is easily avialable in noida . On hydrolysis it give acetylene.

I bought a pound of calcium carbide from a seller in the czech republic over eBay for 13$ CAD, shipping was standard mail costs. Unless you really are
just up for the challenge of making lithium carbide in which case go for it, but if you need quick and easy acetylene, buy some calcium carbide (aka.
carbid) on eBay.

Where you can get calcium carbide
Abe voh desi jadi butiya bek ta hai. nahi to modinagar aa sake to yah aa ja yah pe calcium carbide bhot aasani se mil jata hai. Chandini chowk kiske
sath jata hai vo to delhi mai hai . Kisi mango vale ke yah se le aa vo aam pakane me use use kar te hai.
