Napthalene Li/Na reduction of alcohols

Has anyone ever tried something like this? I'm curious if it will be able to reduce an activated alcohol. I have a feeling it acts like a slightly less powerful reluctant than in the birch reduction. However it's possible it's stronger because of the aprotic reaction conditions.

All I really found was this wikipedia article.
