It works on XP, I know. At least from emule as .rar. And I got it to work without transfer to DVD (big file) by extracting or moving it to a different
folder. I think I had already associated it with daemon tools by then. It was trial and error, and suddenly the dialog on disc set up started. Not
very helpful but I'm not trying to give advice.
But when I deleted what I thought was one of three copies made in this trial/error, well, the file path that dialog was using was unclear for me and I
no longer have it. [duh]Check files before emptying recycle bin[/duh] This is no biggie and I've not downloaded it again. I was so pissed I
deleted the other copies, too.
This is because this 2001 edition sucks, for our purposes, in general, IMHO. Its reputation comes from earlier versions. Each newer edition sucks more
for those without millions to spend. The one in the library, the '78 ed. I find much better, and if you can find earlier ones...
If you can find the earlier ones, keep in mind the weird way they write. In the first part of an article, they make chemistry seem very easy, leaving
out many important things like temps, side or in fact major reactions, and pressures. You have to know better and really dig in to an article to get
it. And some of their refs are pretty obscure.
Does everyone else disagree with me on this?
EDIT: AHA! Found another copy in the "unzipped" folder, and I have another on DVD. Futzed around...copied the unzipped to a new
folder...opened daemon tools...mounted image...and as usual only the .cue file shows up. So- changed the "files of type 'all images'
"(default) to 'all files', so now it sees the .bin. Opened the .bin and success!

Ws anyone ever able to log into the old pyro archive at denver - something like ftp.paradox.denver - years ago though I think i only ever got in once
they had loads of inteesting files - this was back in the days of 14.4k modems!

Amazing ! The hard copy I burnt on CD doesn't work. I tried mounting with daemon from the .cue file without anymore success: I then tried from
.bin and it worked !

I have a old book called 'glass working by heat and abrasion' from 1912 by 'Paul N. Hasluck'. It has procedures for making
glassware mainly for chemistry apart from cosmetic glassware.
I could scan it in and upload it to the FTP if anyone is interested.

If you try some of this I hope you succeed. I find glass blowing very difficult, you need hands more stable than a brain surgeon's. I have 25mm
bora-silicate tubes which I played with.

froot, thank you for the glass working book, but in the future can you compress the file please ? Rar made it more than 10 times smaller (7 Mb, and
the original pdf is over 80 Mb).
By doing this, we gain more ftp space and more time (some members are still on the dial up, you know ?)

It's also out in linux format.
Another is http://www.7-zip.org/ as a far better compression than Zip.
Test showed the following for 1.79Mb of files.
.zip 871Kb at maximum compression
.7z 520Kb at standard compression

I actually set the scanner to black and white, after the first attempt where I could see the red backing around the sides.
I then set it to 70 dpi but the scan was unreadable. I found it to be marginally readable at 300 dpi 'print quality' which is probably
responsable for the file size. If you still see colour in it I'll have to juggle some more with the settings.

I was able to access the FTP fine today. However the document I downloaded, when I went into it there was an "error reading document", but
that may just have been a coincidence.
The file I downloaded yesterday worked fine though.
