Vials

I have looked on ebay and many other sites looking for glass screw-top vials. I know that elemental scientific sells some but their prices are high. I had a supply of baby food jars I have been using to store chemicals but not my supply has been cut off and I am running out.

Does any body know where glass vials of the 4-6 dram range can be bought at less than $0.50? I have seen some websites but they are not cheap.

I mostly need them for my elements and for small amounts of homemade chems.

While I am posting this I will also ask where one can buy around 10 seal-able glass ampules.

Thanks

50 cent for a chemical vial/jar is a little low, considering that one can use them again and agian if the quality is good.

I'll rather have good vials than cheap ones.

If you look for Qorpak glass with the green phenolic cap with Telfon gasket , they are superb but usually a little pricey. I-CHEM vials are probably the best I've ever seen, usually in ultrapure borosilicate with Teflon liners (the blue caps).

Most my vials and jars from 1-1000ml is reused chemical containers, which I had easy access to working in a lab, thereby being introduced to Qorpak and I_CHEM vials/jars..

on amazon.com you can buy wheaton ampoules, but you have to buy 100 for up to 150$
maybe someone here could sell you a few of them? I would like a few as well actually.
but if you need to improvise you can make your own ampoules from pasteur pipettes.

I think those are the ones I will buy.

Anybody know about seal-able ampules

I was unable to find those on ebay, also I edited my post to show 144 vials for 35 dollars instead of 72 for 25, although you probably don't need that many vials.

Edit: what sized ampoules did you need? if you don't need more than 5 ml than try amazonsupply to get 144 of them:o

Talk to Dr. Bob! Last I checked he had plenty of vials hanging around at amazing prices. Don't be shy about picking up other lab necessities from him either. Boxes of glass-ware from him are always a treat and usually have extras! Not trying to 'dick-ride' or advertise but he's the best person I've ever dealt with.

Active Surplus in Toronto has them in their store, the sealable ampoules, pre-scored. probably $0.50 each I forget what I paid for them. They are 75ml and 25ml.

Wait, are you selling them or the Canadian Surplus store?

Active Surplus sells them. Sorry for the confusion. The photo is of the ones I bought.

Their prices aren't as good as Dr. Bob for sure, but I just can't help talking about that place! You'll see why in this photo:

I don't have any sealable ampules, but I do have a variety of vials and smaller bottles around 4-6 drams. I'll send you my email and we can work out a deal.

Those are good prices for sealable ampules, I have only used them a few times, but we paid more than that years ago. I was not great at sealing them, but did eventually do it. A MAPP type torch or oxygen/propane torch works best, but others will work if you have good hands, which I don't, apparently.

Active surplus also sells 5ml and 50ml ampules, for 50 cents each. I got a few when I was there this past weekend. Their prices on flasks and rbfs are not the greatest (4$ for a 25ml erlenmyer and 70$ for a 1l graduated cylinder) , but sometimes you can get really good deals on the more "exotic" glassware. For example, they once had a 3000ml 5 neck ace glass rbf, 250$ new, for 40$ and I bought a four neck 500ml rbf made by ace glass for 15$ on my last visit. I would not recommend them for basic labglass such as beakers and the like, but they definitively have a wide variety of bottles, storage media and little odd pieces, not to mention their electronics section which is unrivaled. I you ever have the opportunity to go to one of their two locations, definitively take it and before you know it, 3 hours will have passed.

http://www.activesurplus.com/

You could try ordering from them, however they only list a minute fraction of their in store stock online. You could always call them and see if if they have what you want.

www.specialtybottle.com has been a great source of vials and jars for me. They are a bit over the mentioned price range, but I thought I'd mention them for their quality and variety of containers.

You can get some perfectly adequate ampoules for free at the supermarket/photo store; just pop in and ask for some 35mm film canisters. They usually chuck 'em and thus will be glad to give you them - at best, I can get maybe 30-40 per week and they are of a perfect size for holding a lot of inorganic solids and salts - they can even be used as small beakers, although they are opaque, for testing things and are disposable.

I hope this is on topic... i have a half dozen boxes each of 2 dram and 8 dram vials, but they don't have a threaded top, it has a rim like a crimp top might be used with. Can these be used for anything? I am considering tossing them to reclaim some space.

If they are glass try listing them on ebay for 4 dollars and see if anybody takes.

Next time I come down to buy some glassware, I would be happy to take them off your hands, along with anything else you do not want :D.

These are likely designed for rubber septa crimp tops, like old vaccine bottles. They are sometimes called serum bottles, or a few other names. I have some of the crimp tops, but you need a special tool to crimp them, which I may have one of somewhere, but I would have to look. I have larger vials like that, I think 25, 50 and/or 100 ml, they are low on my list of items to list, since few people seem to want them.
