Why try to get blood from a turnip? Why not start with sugar and yeast like everyone else does? Joking aside, why start with such an odd place like potassium acetate? Is this a homework assignment?

A good reducing agent is necessary like Lithium aluminum hydride, however other reducing agents, some of which would normally be considered swappable are not in this case, for example, sodium borohydride will not easily reduce carboxylic acids.
