Decriminalise drug use, say experts after six-year study.

Could the end of a truly shameful period in societal evolution be in the offing?
And should Teresa May be 'tarred-and-feathered'?

Yes...and yes.

But given this report was put together by academics, police and other people who do actually know what they're talking about...do you really think the government will listen? They never do. Remember what happened with Prof Nutt last year? He (and his panel of experts) made their recommendations, the government promptly ignored most of them and so he resigned. Which made me quite angry - why bother to consult experts if you then ignore them? That's the whole reason for having these groups, they know what they're talking about and MPs don't...

It is inevitable that this legalisation / decriminalisation will happen sooner or later (how can it not) but it will take someone with a pair of stones to stand up and make themselves heard.

.

I think that the truly shameful period in societal evolution is the development of the soul deadening dead-end welfare society that makes so many britons desperate for chemical escape. The politicians who built this system are the ones who should be tarred and feathered.

Also, the Guardian is not a particularly impressive source of scientific news.

Edited to correct typo

Are you for fucking real???

ISTR, users in the US consume >90% of all drugs, 'legal' and 'illegal'!!!

And consecutive US administrations have shamelessly browbeaten the UN, various other international bodies, and governments around the globe to fall in line with their spurious and utterly dishonest concerns in this area for decades!

This American 'War on Drugs' has destroyed countless communities, taken perhaps, millions of lives, wasted trillions of dollars and engendered outright contempt in law-abiding citizens for their own police forces!!!

And just FYI, a truly democratic government exists solely for the wellfare of its citizens!

The corporatist regimes which until very recently have 'controlled' American society are quite unworthy of the name democracy!

no, the whole reason for consultants is political: to appear to be doing something, and then to bury the inaction quietly. but it sometimes backfires.

Personally, I think decriminalisation is like clawing at the underbelly of the 'Beast', whereas outright, across the board legalisation would result in its decapitation!
