Lithium Hydride Preperation


First of all, I will call it energetic due to it's high energy density and it's tendency to release large amounts of energy when reacted in general, OK? Now, I wanna know if there's a high boiling solvent that molten Lithium sinks in so that I can bubble hydrogen through it since I don't have a vacuum pump yet, any ideas?

Also, while were're on the subject if I reacted Lithium Hydride with Aluminium Chloride, how would I separate the Lithium Chloride byproduct from the target compound Lithium Aluminium Hydride?

The Reaction goes like this:
4 LiH + AlCl3 → LiAlH4 + 3 LiCl

What are going to do with this highly reactive product? How are you going to store mixtures with it? Plain aluminium will give much better energy density. I see this compound only as a propellant, with usage of very inert oxidizer, may be lithium perchlorate.

For one, these are novelty items I'd like to have, and two I've devised some propellants that work work well with these compounds.

Lithium hydride (lithium deiteride, more precisely) is used in nuclear weapon. Is it what you gonna produce?

Sadly, there is not. We'd love it if we had a solvent inert to molten lithium that has a high boiling point and lower density than lithium, but it's just not happening.
If there was one, however, it would make storing lithium metal easy...

If you have a Parr pressure reactor, lots of things become possible. Unfortunately, these vessels are seldom available at attractive prices. It used to be, usable vessels were occasionally offered for sale on E-bay, at friendly prices.

Nowadays, it is probable that E-bay has restricted the average Joe from listing such items. Thereby, all offered items, are offered by licensed dealers only. Prices are maxed out.

Sauron, once posted some interesting entrees on the synthesis of LiAlH4, via NaAlH4. If you have a Parr Pressure Reactor.......NaAlH4 is fairly do-able. Check the archives.

It is also conceivable that you can produce Lithium Hydride at ordinary temperatures, by ball milling Lithium Metal in a Hydrogen atmosphere. Check the literature.
