Anyone in Canada up for some oil sands?
I was lurking around on the internet up to the point I found this:

I don't have a company or the cash, but just wanted to point out to other members. 350$ for 10L, which bring to 17.5$ per 500ml, an average chemical
price. Of course to buy 10L, many should be interested to buy parts of the lot.
I was just happy to find you can buy oil sand at reasonable price. It might be interesting to try to extract useful reagents from the oil, or simply
separate the bitumen from the sand, many hours of interesting experimentation, and possible new processes.

Interesting. If I were in true Canada, rather than the Tundra of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesusland_map" target="_blank">The
United States of Canada</a> <img src="../scipics/_wiki.png" />, I would definitely chip in to buy a bucket of this for experimentation
(and for a specimen for my rock/mineral/ore/meteorite/tektite/petroleum collection). You find some obscure things,

On a somewhat related note, I don't understand those of you who complain that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resorcinol"
target="_blank">resorcinol</a> <img src="../scipics/_wiki.png" /> is difficult to obtain or prohibitively expensive. It can be readily
obtained on eBay, for a reasonable price. If you think the price is prohibitive, scale down your experiments and stop wasting valuable reagents.

yeah, and they sell their processed bitumen at a rate that lets it be refined to gasoline at a competitive price. the offer is several hundred times
too much to be sensible. at those prices, you might as well drive up there and scoop it out, yourself.

I doubt the oil company will lets you take the sands...
Although it may be nice to buy the amount and experiment on it.

Could be an idea of bulk purchase? Not too costly per 500 ml quantity for US citizen. About 7-8$ for 500 ml.
If anyone was to buy that I would like to buy a quantity of it. One of my project is to extract and separate pure compounds from oil.
I only have an ounce of Quebec oil. Mine is very fluid, much like lighter fluid, quite brown, but it leaves mark for a few minutes on plastic. Smells
like truck gear box oil.

Pretty sure with enough interest and efforts, one could make sulphur free pure aromatic directly from the oil. Distillation with dichromate in the oil
should oxidise the sulphur before any of its compound could distill. Any of the many sulphur recovery from oil could also be used. Although this
particular oil is sweet.

if you live any where near the places they are drilling(what ever) for the oil sands, you may be able to talk to a worker. I know if I need a
small piece of construction material "x" ( to avoid buying a whole unit of "x" new ) it's prudent to drive by a couple construction sites. many times
workers are more than willing to part with small samples of stuff for low/no cost. of course you come across a few assholes this way but you usually
get one that says ok.
prob get a decent amount for 20$ in person, if you said it was for a school science experiment, or like a gallon for free. but I wouldn't say it
was for amateur chemistry specifically. it could just be in my area, but lots of the guys I have worked around would be quite wary if you start in
with that kind of talk, but again thats construction not oil workers. also I'm not sure it would be all that easy to meet up with a worker on site
like I suggest. you will more than likely have to talk to a gate man and ask to talk a foreman or offer to leave a note.
