Because it is strictly illegal to view any national monument without supervision , unless you're blind you can now be arrested just for being in
Washington D.C. Emergency efforts are underway to conceal and camoflage iconic sites such as the Statue of Liberty , Mount Rushmore , and the Grand
Canyon. A National state of emergency may soon be called to place all private resources in the direct command of our dear leader the commander in
chief. All hail to the chief.

H2SO4 is so useful it's hard to argue that DEA should even bat an eye about it.

Nope! For one thing, the Federal Government still exists (and draws a paycheck). The War on Drugs is still on, the drone army still flies, and there
are still more black men in prison than there were enslaved in the antebellum South. Moreover, various state, municipal, and corporate governments
remain intact.
Moreover, informed political and philosophical anarchism doesn't simply advocate for a cold-turkey end to "government", but rather an end to
hierarchical structures, such as poverty, racism, homophobia, and patriarchy. The state is often a target of anarchists simply because it is such a
purveyor of violence and inequality, but I think it is more proper to think of anarchism as opposition to kyriarchy.
Framed as such, there is not a lot anarchic about the Shutdown. It's a crisis internal to the state-capitalism framework, and one that is unlikely to
resolve in a manner that eliminates hierarchy in any way that an anarchist would be satisfied with.

I don't think it's true that you can't look at public monuments, though I may be wrong.
It is true that many federally funded parks and monuments are closed and inaccessible because the staff that would usually protect them from vandalism
have been sent home. Access is restricted to keep these places and objects safe. No one is going to take you to jail for looking at the Washington
Monument from a distance.

I'm proud of everyone for not turning this topic into a political flamewar—and honestly a little surprised. I guess there's one thing we
can all agree on: the shutdown sucks.
On a barely-related note; I just got a notice that SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, f.k.a. 'Food Stamps') benefits were reduced due to
a federal decision. Those bastards fail to do their jobs, but still get paid; meanwhile, those of us who depend on the government for assistance just
to get through hard times are shafted. Did anyone else here get one of these notices? For me, personally, it's not a big deal. I'm a single guy,
living alone, and only responsible for feeding myself and a small cat—who loves to lick empty tuna cans. I've never required as much as was
allotted anyway—possibly because I don't often buy meat products or prepared foods—but I worry for those who are barely scraping
by.
[edit] This post is not meant as an invitation to discuss the politics behind welfare programs! I'm just curious of anyone else here is adversely
affected.
