Can Marcury(l) Nitrate activate aluminium?

Is Hg2(NO3)2 suitable to prepare an Al/Hg amalgam? I know the chloride is best, and that Hg(NO3)2 works. I have got elemental mercury but my nitric acid is about 50% concentrated. Not strong enough to get the (ll) salt.

Yes, any soluble mercury compound will do.

Do you have a distillation apparatus? Not that it is necessary, but you could make conc. Nitric Acid, and that is very useful.

I tried to use it and couldn't get it going. Instead of distilling nitric acid I procured some HgCl2. I used concentrated sulfuric acid, sodium bicarbonate and hydrochloric acid. The procedure was described on sciencemadness as well as on erowid. The chloride works awesome.
