...I was gonna ask some basic questions! Like, we just BUY KMnO4 or acetone, or any number of other things... but how does industry mine or synthesize these?

I think they make acetone by the decomposition of calcium acetate

AFAIK, they no longer decompose calcium acetate, they use the cumene process, which produces both acetone and phenol. Calcium acetate is useful on a small lab-scale though.
