Raschig rings are usually tubes, length rougly equal to the diameter. I've also seen rings that were split tubes and even some shaped like a "G",
don't know if they are known under a different name. Something like a scouring pad can easily be packed to tight which can cause excessive hold up and
flooding.

The answer is in practicality; insulation will heat column faster, or keep it from cooling quickly, although insulation almost always results in loss
of observability. An appropriate set up merely needs to achieve a function as efficiently as practically possible; some procedures will benefit from
insulation, some will not; IMO, qualitative observation is helpful, so if not necessary, I don't use insulation. That being said, ace wrap and a
small space heater often works sufficiently nicely and the assembly is easy.

When I use insulation I use pipe lagging that was cheap, it has a bit up the center pre cut, Ive found it in 4 sizes and I use a size small than I
need, that way with the side split from end to end you get a gap so you can see all the way up one side the tube, it also means one side is slightly
cooler.
To me that makes me think it would work better. But thats just a guess

For cutting rachel rings I just do a quick nick with a file, dosnt need to be all around the tube, you can do them all at once then run a bunsen flame
along the pippet, seems to work for me
