FTP users

4 new folders: BOOKS - FICTION, BOOKS - NON-FICTION, HOW-TO, and MEDICAL have been
added to the FTP. After several months of working extremely hard with 2 jobs, I'm finally
getting back to scanning in Hydrazine And Its Derivatives(1st Edition 1984).
The process has been tedious because
of the size of the scan files. I found away around this without creating a 5 GB file. Scan the
file as a .TIF, edit with PhotoImpact, and then import into Adobe Acrobat. This is keeping the
page sizes down to 350 KB. I should end up with a 450-500 MB file which can be zipped down.
Resolution is 300 DPI which is sufficient for viewing.

FTP client

What FTP client are you using ? I've never seen messages like those in FileZilla.

FileZilla client: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla

In FileZilla "Site manager" dialogue click "Advanced settings" for the FTP connection settings and mark "Use active mode".
At least this worked for me.

FileZilla

Sometimes using different combinations of port #s and switching between Active/Passive
mode works. I've encountered this on the computers at work logging on to my own FTP.
Go figure. :(

I cannot get the ftp to work. I built a new machine, and wsftp pro latest ver will not find the site. I entered the account info same as what always worked before on old machine. All my other ftp's including axehandles work fine. Installed filezilla and it connects and logs in as far as my account info is concerned, and sticks at no directory listing. After a minute or so it says cannot retrieve directory listing. Port 21, etc., all info same as what worked on other computer with same program. There are zero changes as far as internet connection is concerned, only change is computer. Operating system is same as old one. Any ideas?

Sir,
If OS is Win XP, then you might have forgotten to configure builtin firewall feature of XP. Or you might check your network connections (e.g. IP conflicts, router configuration, etc.)

Win 98 second edition, on old computer and new one. I hate anything higher as they force too much control out of your hands. I like to be able to configure everything and not be forced to do things the microsoft way. I do not have any firewall of any kind, connection is DSL. Not worried about hackers, nothing they can do I cannot fix in under 3 hours anyway. Thanks for replying.

FileZilla

I couldn't work on my computer for while but all new account requests have been handled.

As for connecting in FileZilla client, sometimes Passive Mode helps.

1) Click "Edit" on menu bar
2) Click "Settings..." from pulldown menu
3) Click "Firewall settings" (1st entry under "Connection" tree)
4) Click "Passive Mode" checkbox or type alt-p
5) Click "OK" button

Retry the connection. It works most of the time. Hope it helps you out. Right now, this is
all I can offer because I'm on a computer at work.

I guess I give up then. Passive mode is on by default upon install, just checked. It worked fine on two other computers, nothing is different as far as net connection goes. It appears to log in and verify my account just fine, then says error cannot retrieve directory listing. Maddening to not know why.

Forgot to mention but same wsftp pro and same filezilla work fine at my own ftp and also axehandles, only yours won't work. Funny thing is this same error is why I cannot get into the scipics here using any ftp. Polverone said it had to do with my DSL as he runs into same problem, I think he said at work, but he gets in fine at home.

IrC, I have the same problem:
I've been able to acces the ftp everytime just untill a couple of weeks ago, where I started to recieve exactly the same error. I haven't changed anything on my computer and I have no clue how to fix this (tried the passive/active mode too). If someone has a good idea, I'm all ears.

Read my update to the post above yours, I was editing my post while you were making yours.

No idea how my update got edited out, I reloaded the page and it was there last night. What it said was I got it to work by making sure all boxes were unchecked under firewall. Passive was checked by the install program to start with.

FTP/Internet quirks

It's strange to me that at work, sometimes I have to change the settings in FileZilla's client
to access my own FTP. This is a university computer at work. I don't know if the problem
is with FileZilla or the network. I envy the university's upload speed - about 9 times as fast
as what I have.
