Beetle color change
This kind of reminded me of a butterfly wing changing color with a drop of alcohol and reverting back after evaporating. I wonder how it might benefit
the beetle?
"Now, Ling Bai and Zhongze Gu and colleagues at Southeast University in Nanjing, China, have developed a photonic crystal ink that mimics the way
Tmesisternus isabellae – a species of longhorn beetle – reversibly switches its color from gold to red according to the humidity in its
environment."

In the previous post the link seems to be gone and this is just more of the same.
"When gazing upon the golden tortoise beetle one may think they are observing a dew drop on the surface of a leaf, for its metallic sheen gives off a
reflective glare. One glance away, however, and one may think the beetle has disappeared to be replaced by a red lady beetle."

Here you can see a photo of the beetle both gold and then changed to a red.

It is too bad he published his information. Imagine if he went straight to the authorities with "look at this mystery substance no one but me knows
how to make and use, now let me put it on your currency". Yes, eventually someone might connect he dots but I bet it would take a while. Knowing China
hey would destroy all the existing beetle populations to keep the dye falling into counterfeiter hands. If you do not agree consider how they cornered
the sink market; preventing export of the larva under penalty of death.
I also say this material would be really cool to have in your house. When you walked in from a wet day of rain there would be temporary tracks. Or if
you spilled something clear on the floor it would be easy to see. Or if you had a leak in a pipe in your wall you could spot it early. The first
person to turn this into a pigment for paints will be rich.
