Same here, the secure version of sciencemadness new posts is my home page and it just wouldn't even attempt to load it, luckily I typed it in manually to sciencemadness.org and it worked.

Same here I can't get onto the site with https but I can with http. The error I get with firefox is "the connection with www.sciencemadness.org has terminated unexpectedly. Some data may have been transfered". IE gives a page not found error.

EDIT: its the end of the day for me here, and it seems like only 1/3 to 1/2 of the normal ammount of daily visitors have been to the forum today.

Okay, Im starting to get freaked out, this is not good, https stops working again and these mirror universe posts show up again and my post count changes and everything. Posts from before are gone, is this happening only on my end or something?

Mirror universe posts?
And I'm scared, we are the only members who have been on in hours:o.

EDIT: I added you to my MSN Bromic.

forum security compromised ?

That's what I suspect may be occurring .

I have seen disappearing posts ,
including several of my own , the most recent just a few minutes ago in the
Ammonium Pyrosulfate thread where I gave a detailed decription of a d. 1.5 HNO3 distillation experiment .

and wondered about the new user

ChemGrl5 which always returns no view of the " last post " when the link is clicked .

Something very wierd is afoot ,
maybe time to change some admins passwords to put an end to the mischief .

I'm getting the same problem, https log in doesn't work, but http works just fine. However, I haven't noticed any disappearing threads or such yet, though there has been a lack of activity (in general).

Something is definitely going on with the
website . Posts that disappeared for a couple of days from the HMX thread suddenly reappeared , and one my posts today in the Ammonium Pyrosulfate thread appeared for a few minutes and then disappeared completely . HTTPS is completely dead .

So.....WTF is going on with these glitches ?

Something is amiss allright. However, only polverone has the power to acces specific server configurations.

So far everything points to a server glitch, but you never know.

I'm alive, but getting the same error as everyone else. Haven't noticed the post thing but I haven't logged on in the past few days.

Hopefully this is just a server glitch or something...

Gahhh, another error, Polverone was on last night less then 24 hours ago and should be on the list of people that have visted in the last 24 hours but must only be on the other phantom version of sciencemadness for now. For people that didn't notice, SM was like this most of the day yesterday then at night it suddenly fixed itself and all the posts made while it was messed up disappeared including this one and the one I made in the references thread and a bunch of other posts came up that I couldn't see before, then later at night it messed up again and https stopped working again and this thread came back up and the others went away. Maybe it is only doing this for some people and others are seeing the version of the site where https does work?

I did a quick survey of 3 people I know to got them to access https from their computers. It worked for 2 of them but not for one....:o

BTW none of them are members if it makes a difference somehow.

EDIT: Whoa...weird....Rosco, you werent even visible under "whos online" when that post appeared.

It could be a bad drive in a RAID array ,
and it is resulting in the data phasing in and out like the tides , as it loses and then finds it for awhile , losing it again in a sort of cycle .

:oChemGrl5 which always returns no view of the " last post " when the link is clicked .

Just thought I should respond since I saw my name mentioned.
My last communication here was not actualy a post, but a U2U message to another user. That was 6 days ago. I began to wonder myself if something wasn't wrong 4 days ago when I noticed my name still appered under the forum heading and I had not actualy made a post. I was thinking someone else would have surely posted to this forum in 2 days. There my or my not be more to this, I really don't know, basicly I asked another user if I should be suspicious of another new user offering for sale "hard to find chems". Oddly enough my name has been stuck there every since. Thats really freaking me out.

Heck , don't worry about it .

It happens all the time that one persons post is what kills an entire thread real dead ......

so killing the whole site is just taking things to a whole new level ;)

The mystery explained

Micfo migrated their whole business to a new datacenter on new hardware. Our site went along for the ride. To ease the transition, they have left the old hardware running for a time.

This means that there were 2 copies of sciencemadness online simultaneously, one running in the old datacenter and one in the new datacenter. Individual users saw whichever one they had the DNS entry for. Everyone should be seeing the site on its new hardware, now that the DNS information has had time to propagate. Posts that were made on the old hardware after the changeover began are probably lost. People were seeing different versions of the site based on whether or not the computer they were using had yet received the updated DNS information. This is why posts vanished and reappeared: people were actually looking at different copies of the site.

I need to put in a request to Micfo to fix our SSL certificate, which needs to be updated now that we have a new IP address. Micfo says that performance and uptime should be better in the new datacenter. I did see when I logged in that we are running on a shiny new Opteron server (ooh! aah!).

I was going to complain about how Micfo didn't give any warning before the change, but it turns out they did. I received an email some days ago from them telling of the coming migration, but it was to an email account that I check very rarely nowadays. I will change my contact email with them so I don't miss any further announcements. Sorry for the unexpected transition, but at least we can rest easy that the trouble wasn't malicious.

That's quite odd, I sent 2 U2U messages to other users, and they haven't responded yet (this was 2 days ago). Maybe this weird server issue has something to do with people not receiving U2U messages as well.

Edit: Polverone replied with the reason why it was screwing up just as I was posting this

Oo, Ahh, a new server :)

If there is any way to retrieve my post in the Ammonium Pyrosulfate thread from the old hardware , it should be migrated manually . It was very detailed experiment report with some good information that hasn't been covered before .

Edit: here's how to access the old board (for a limited amount of time):

go to http://porsche.micfo.com/~sciencem/talk/ and you will see the board that was migrated away from. Rosco, I have already rescued your longer ammonium pyrosulfate post and edited it into your existing most recent post on that topic. If anyone else wrote anything valuable there that isn't showing up here, now is the time to rescue it.
