Where to buy large fritted column
Hey all,
A PhD student in our lab recently broke one of our larger gravity columns. I've been trying to look for a replacement, but am turning up blank
surfing the sites of our normal suppliers. Without going to a custom glassblower, does anyone know a company that stocks something similar to this?:
internal diameter: 150 mm
volume: approx. 1L (that'd put length around 600 mm, doesn't have to be exact)
with a 2L bulb reservoir attached to the top
standard frit at the bottom and PTFE stopcock
I'm currently based in the UK so UK/EU suppliers would be easiest, but I'd be willing to look worldwide for this, price pending.

Maybe they could get a larger one, if you ask. Chromatography columns are about the simplest thing to make for a glassblower, so if you have one on
site, as I imagine you should have, then perhaps you could have a word with them?

Thanks, forgottenpassword - we've got a couple this size already, but I didn't think they were particularly easy to make. I'll ask around to our
usual custom vendors and get some quotes. The uni has a glassblower on campus, but the turnaround might be 6 months or so

Well, if he has a lathe it's a simple matter of attaching the filter disc, then drawing out two ends of the tube and mating them with ground glass
joints. I'm only a beginner with glassworking, but I think even I could do it! I don't have a lathe, though, so I couldn't!

I have lots of various used glass columns in almost every size imaginable, likely have one near that size and design, but in the US, so the shipping
would be quite high, but if you don't find one soon, let me know by u2u and I can see what the shipping would be. The actual column would be cheap,
as I would like to get rid of them to a good home.

Thanks, both of you. We were able to get hold of a couple glassblowers nearby that quoted reasonable prices, so looks like we'll just go the custom
route. It'll be easier than shipping things internationally. Good to know that these things are relatively easy to make!

They don't seem hard. They're just hefty.
I'd imagine a simple squibb funnel would be harder to make than a LC Column!
Anyway, nice you found one! Was there no chance on just fusing or amending the larger one that was broken?
