Ethylenediamine from ethylenediamine dihydrochloride

Can somebody inform me of a way to make ethylenediamine from ethylenediamine dihydrochloride? The dihydrochloride is way cheaper and I would think safer to handle. I would rather store it this way and prepare ethylenediamine when it is needed. Ill be using it for polyureas unless another diamine seems better.

1. Sodium hydroxide. Extract with solvent of choice solubility.
2. Maybe carbonate (didn't check pKa).
3. A zoetrope distillation.

No problem. It is an awkward beast.

In many cases you can simply use the salt in place of the free base, and then simply add more of whatever base you are using in the reaction already. For instance, I just used a piperidine HCl salt in a reaction, and simply added one more equivalent of triethylamine to it than planned.

Take Dr Bob's advice. Ethylenediamine is a royal pain to purify. Once it has seen water it is almost impossible to get it anhydrous. Even drying over solid KOH is not fully effective. Attached are two papers which give purification methods.
