Old styphnic acid prep

Hi I was recently reading some interesting books on goggle books when I saw this.
<a href="https://books.google.com.au/books?id=b7ktAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA705&ci=55%2C668%2C791%2C496&source=bookclip"><img src="https://books.google.com.au/books?id=b7ktAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA705&img=1&zoom=3&hl=en&sig=ACfU3U2YHPQBKO10N6ZFPd6w5CSKTFJiFQ&ci=5 5%2C668%2C791%2C496&edge=0"/></a>
the book is from 1869 and as usual they don't go into much detail except for the sg of the acid and the variety's of resin you can use
I can get asafoetida from the local Indian food shop but you have to separate it from the flour and gum acacia that its mixed with it + I it smells like someone let go a bad egg fart phew.
anyway a few pages back they were describing picric acid and they were using no sulphuric acid in the mix just straight nitric kept cold and left in contact with the resin for 36 hours as described here.

So I am assuming that the styphnic preparation probably would work if I used cold 1.2 sg acid and left it in contact for 36 hours then diluted the acid with cold h2o to precipitate the styphnic acid .
any thoughts experience would be appreciated. cheers nuxy.

Styphnic acid is of little interest as an explosive ─ and is less powerful than picric acid!
It's used mainly in the form of its lead salt to sensitise lead azide to flame!

For organic nitration, density of nitric acid should be 1.50, or higher!
