Get into school. Do not study anything (very important part). Wait until the night before your exams. Add Sodium Hydroxide solution to aluminium. There you go, making hydrogen under pressure...

Covering zinc with H2SO4 is another way to generate hydrogen. Also there is electrolysis of water. Is there a preferred method for lab scale hydrogenations at atmospheric pressure? Or is the choice simply a matter of convenience/economics?

NaBH4 is probably the best. Unfortunately, the price has never come down enough to allow for wide popularity.

Just drip an NaBH4/H20 solution into acid, via a hypodermic needle inserted into a mercury-valve supplying a sealed system. Hydrogen is generated, creates back pressure, and momentarily stops liquid flow until the H2 is consumed. Valve will feed automatically, until reaction eventually stops absorbing hydrogen.
