DMSO reaction with peptides
Hey guys,
Would pure DMSO react with a peptide? I.e melanotan II? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanotan_II
The main threat to cleavage of the peptide would be pH, and DMSO has a pKa of 35 vs 16 for water and -8 for HCl.

DMSO can act as a mild oxidant but only under acidic or basic conditions, from a strong acid or an alkyl amine

Any thoughts? Could a solution of this peptide and DMSO be stable?

For the short term, I would not expect any immediate reaction, but compounds stored in DMSO do tend to oxidize due to reaction with atmospheric
oxygen, which reacts well with molecules in DMSO. This has been well documented in the pharma industry, where DMSO stock solutions often go bad with
time and temperature, usually traced to oxidation of activated positions.
Also, while DMSO can help small molecules get through the skin, it is not as likely that it will work well for peptides, but I don't know of any
studies to show that either it does or does not work with peptides.

Right. somewhat easy to address, inert gas. uncharted territory it seems, even the DMSO delivery method is quite new I think. Thanks drBob

DMSO is known to be able to oxidate free thiol groups, so if your protein contains cysteine residues- yes, you may harm it.
