Protecting metal or glass cookware from flame residue (wood fire/oil fire)
Both wood and oil fires seem to leave a varying degree of soot and char on the outside of cookware that is very difficult to remove. Is there
anything that can be put on the outside to protect the cookware from this?

Soot and char can be effectively removed from cookware with oxidizing acids. I've cleaned aluminium cookware with fuming nitric acid.
Smells like ammonia....

An old trick is to cover your cookware in ivory soap, it might work for glassware too even though it might be a bit harder to get the soap to stick to
the surface. It won't prevent soot completely but it makes it easier for sure.

Yup! We used to rub liquid detergent on the bottoms of our campfire cooking pots, before we used 'em. Come clean-up time, the soot rinsed right
off.
