Mercury metal from eBay ?

Is there a way to get Hg metal from eBay ?
I could not find any sellers, except USA sellers with brutally expensive shipping costs.

Any ideas ?

I think there's still at least one person selling it on here, can't remember who it was though.

If you've already searched eBay and aren't satisfied with anything you've found, I don't see how there would be any way to make some more satisfactory mercury appear on there.

Shipping Hg in commerce properly is bloody expensive-

Shipping it improperly, potentially even more so. If you just want a small sample, look to salvage a bit from sources such as old heating equipment, thermostats or vaporstats with Mercury bulb tilt witches, old car trunk lid light switches, etc.

Rapopart’s Rules for critical commentary:

1. Attempt to re-express your target’s position so clearly, vividly and fairly that your target says: “Thanks, I wish I’d thought of putting it that way.”
2. List any points of agreement (especially if they are not matters of general or widespread agreement).
3. Mention anything you have learned from your target.
4. Only then are you permitted to say so much as a word of rebuttal or criticism.

Where are you located? That helps figure out where you can find some.

If anyone near NC needs some, I can sell some at the going rate, but local pickup only. Shipping it is a pain. A few people have sold it on here before as well.

Less than one pound of liquid Mercury can be shipped without HAZMAT restrictions according to rule 49 CFR 173.164 (e)

If you're in the USA I too can supply mercury, sodium and gallium.

What is the going rate anyway?

I purchased some mercury switches to obtain the mercury from them but only managed to get around 6 grams from 50 switches.
Anyone have any suggestions on which one of these would be a better source for larger amounts of mercury?

Greenlight If you buy cinnabar http://m.ebay.ca/itm/200332970790?_mwBanner=1#ht_2274wt_952

And follow the wet way synth on this page http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=18162&page=4

You should be able to get a reasonable amount of mercury.

you may not be aware but since March it has been illegal to buy/sell/use/own mercury in the EU,
so you should not find mercury publicly on sale,
even in switches, thermometers, barometers ....

good luck ....

I am aware it is illegal to own but I would still like it to make a couple of chemicals.

Thanks Nux, I might have a go at that method as it yields more than I can obtain from switches.

This is not the case. It is illegal in the UK, not in the entire EU. The EU has restrictions on certain explosives precursors and the UK has combined these restrictions with regulations on poisonous compounds. In many other EU countries the regulations on explosives precursors are not combined with other regulations. In the Netherlands we (still) may own it.

False. It must be shipped ground-only unless compliance with the packing requirements are met.

When you tell FedEx it has to go ground-only, they will ask you what is in it. Unless you lie, they will make you declare it as HazMat per their corporate policy.

If I understand it correctly, you can't sell mercury metal or anything containing it on ebay http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/hazardous-materials.ht...

Mercury rules vary state to state in Aus as far as I believe, there's no restrictions on mercury in SA. Anyone can feel free to prove me wrong if they are certain about this.

Are you speaking from experience or are you making assumptions, what's this corporate policy you speak of? FedEx has a service called FedEx ground so why would they ask what's in the box just because I want to use ground service, it's totally separate from FedEx air and about 3x cheaper. I would never put mercury on an airplane even though I'm comfortable with my packing I would never endanger unsuspecting people. Anyone who would is strictly sick in my opinion. I follow the rules closely, if you saw in the other thread my Gallium ebay business just got canned by eBay even though I ship it by FedEx. If you can't ship it usps you can't sell it on eBay is what they told me. I wonder how FedEx and ups feel about that.

I've wanted to run through that process for a long time but I can't find a cheap supplier of the mineral and it's not cheap on ebay. I wonder if anyone here lives near a supply.

Praxichys, sorry I didn't mean to sound so agressive but I just find it odd that we have totally different experiences and there is only one set of rules. I ship out the same way I receive my bulk orders from a well established and Known company. Reguardless I know I follow the regulations because I had to take a 4 hour class on packaging for hazard class 8. Which was compete waste of money since ebay changed there rules. But I also believe you too, even though a corporation should be the same everywhere we know there are inconsistencies. Anyway all good here.

I also used to ship more chemicals, but the process has become a nightmare. I understand why some companies have to charge so much. Chinese companies do it illegally because they know that the USPS and other shippers cannot arrest them in China, and the government does not care about shipping rules as long as they bring US dollars to China.

It is possible to ship hazmat chemicals legally, but not easy, cheap or simple. Best solution is to ship solids, such as the salts of amines (pyridine HCl, TEA HCl, and others are solids, so much simpler to ship) oxides of some metals, and small amounts (under 35 g can sometimes ship as small samples, which is simpler). But again, even that requires a certain amount of training and paperwork.

And... where's the biggest producer of Hg worldwide? (or at least used to be?)

SPAIN.
Good keywords and you'll be able to find it in LARGE quantities for cheap if needed. Smaller quantities are always available from people living in Spain but for a higher price.
