Iron dust ?. One way of making pyrophoric iron powder is to heat ferrous oxalate in the absence of air. This gives a very fine iron powder which ignites if allowed to fall through air. All you need for iron sulfide is iron filings and if you can't get them as filings just file a lump of iron and collect the filings. That should be fine enough to make iron sulphide.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Hi, I've used fine steel wool before instead of filings. As I was only after H2S, this worked well enough. Earlier post below on performing the reaction in a test tube, giving a product and an interesting sound effect.

Mention is also made of using Al foil to make aluminium sulphide, which apparently makes a better sulphide for H2S production (no acidification required and no H2).

What minimal grain size of aluminium is required?

Never tried it, but imagine little rolled balls of foil, or partly powdered via a blender will react with excess molten sulphur in a test tube.

If its H2S you are after paraffin wax and sulphur under moderate heat is cited as being efficient e.g.

Do ensure you know the dangers of working with this gas. That cant be overstated!!!

Why?
You can make FeS with iron filings or even steel wool.
