2 Questions about Glyoxal

1. What is the solubility of Iron oxide, or Iron acetate or Iron III chloride in such a solvent? Any educated guesses?

2. Is it possible to prepare Glyoxal through Acetaldehyde without using nitric acid?

Thanks

1. no idea, but since commercial glyoxal is an aqueous solution (40% glyoxal usually) I think it highly likely that ferric chloride is soluble in glyoxal solution. Anhydrous glyoxal I don't know about.

2. Yes use selenium dioxide but if you can't get nitric acid then SeO2 is probably even less helpful.

3. there is at least one extensive thread on the preparation of glyoxal on SM so try using the search engine
