A solution of Na2S2O8 (100 mmol)[23.8 g] in water (50 ml) was added dropwise at 85-90° for 0.5-1 h to to a vigorously stirred mixture of alkanoic
acid [butyric acid] (100 mmol) [8.8 g, 9.2 ml) and other components [100 mmol CuCl2*2H2O, 17.0 g) in water (90 ml). The mixture was heated at the
same temperature for 4-4.5h with vigorous stirring. On cooling the mixture was extracted with ether (3x100 ml). The extract was dried (MgSO4), the
ether evaporated, and the residue was analysed by g.l.c., using propionic acid as standard. To isolate lactones (II) and (III), the residue was
neutralized with a saturated solution of Na2CO3, extracted with ether, dried (MgSO4), the ether evaporated, and the residue distilled in vacuo.
Yield: 15% (44% conversion, gamma-lactone 34%), ~1.3 g
