It looks interesting. Is there a link to the original publication? I do not think this will be of use to anyone here as methanol is cheep to buy OTC.
The catalyst is also a bit out of the way to acquire. I am sure this process will be employed on Mars for manufacturing fuels.
I wonder if halomethanes could be produced if a halogen was added to the mixture of gasses. I do recall reading somewhere that hydrogen and chlorine
react in the presents of sunlight aggressively.

Depends where you are in the EU. I can buy it from numerous online sellers in the UK, and it's pretty cheap.

I can buy methanol OTC as windscreen fluid concentrate (it has a bit of soap though) or aquire it cheaply from most chemical suppliers. You can also
buy it as fuel for camping stoves. As you can see from my location, I'm in Romania, which is an EU country

Methanol can be purchased on ebay uk for£8.00 a litre free post. Its used to produce biodiesel.

It's more interesting for the alternative fuel people, right? Methanol is one easy step from dimethyl ether, which is an effective fuel for
diesel-cycle engines, and it burns cleaner than standard diesel fuel. Unfortunately it requires pressurized storage (BP 249 K).

Check out the EFOY fuel cartridges for fuel cells. Really pure methanol 
Was quite easy for me to find a place to ship it to, just ask a supply for caravan supply.
