Thermometer Adapter

This is my first thermometer adapter. I have been doing chemistry for years but never bothered doing things that required monitoring the temperature of a distillation, until now.

How do I use this? How do I get the thermometer inside it? Do I break the center of the plastic O-ring? I do not want to break something without knowing I should. It will be difficult to find a new one and have it shipped from China.

If I use this one enough I will upgrade to a full glass version.

Thermometer goes trough the middle of o-ring, and the cap screws the o ring on adapter.

I guess your o-ring doesn't have hole, so you make one.

Run out to the hardware store and get several O rings. They will break, as chemicals attack them over time.

Phlogiston manufacturer/supplier.

For all your phlogiston needs.

Can I get any O-rings that can stand up to nitric acid?

Glass, completely sealed and a cheap thermocouple/thermometer (like the tm-902c) make a nice combination

Viton o-rings will hold up to nitric acid and many things that destroy EPDM o-rings. They however, will not hold up to many other things in the lab like methanol, glacial acetic acid, ammonia, ether, or acetone.

I think at that point I will just buy a glass adapter, they are not much.

Hmm. Do you mean this kind?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/24-40-Glass-Thermometer-Adapter-100...

We used to call such an item, "a thermometer well".

Sealing should no longer be an issue.
