joined a while back want to say hello

I work in cyber security part time and study chemistry at uni part time. ive been interested in chemistry for about 4 years and in the last year ive been out in my lab 3 to 4 days a week sometimes evenings and all day weekends. Im just finishing my first year at uni and absolutely love it. Ive learnt that chemistry is all about patience and trying again and again, failures are a big part of chemistry. Im currently building a lab with fume cupboard etc so im very excited for that. At the moment i do everything outside. Anyway just wanted to say hi. i haven't ever had to ask anything on here as i can always find what i need to know by reading/research but if i might see if i can add to some of the knowledge base already on here.

Welcome. Nice to have you here.
What kind of experimentation do you intend to do in your lab?

Im just trying to make a huge collection of common reagents/chemicals at the moment. i intend to keep building my collection of chemicals by which most are made using off the shelf stuff. i have already synthesised quite a collection of chemicals. I would like to do some harder organic chemistry projects in the future. Also try to synthesise some harder to make chemicals like thionyl chloride for example is one ive wanted to have a go at making. Ive used this forum as a go to diy off the shelf synth resource for years as there is heaps of great stuff on here.

i like to make things myself but i will buy a lot of stuff also. i buy stuff like sulfuric acid, glacial acid acid, sodium bromide, sodium nitrate and anhydrous sodium acetate. So stuff thats too much hassle to make or get good quality OTC and also sodium/potassium salts etc that are just to much fuck around for how cheap you can get large quantity of them for. I probably buy half from chemical supply and half OTC.

Interesting point of view. Make exotic and hard to get reagents yourself, buy the standard stuff. I also made quite a few exotic reagents myself, such as CsBr3, CsICl4, PBr3, PBr5, white P, KIO4, Na3H2IO6, KBrO3, KClO3, while I buy the basic stuff (acids, bases, common solvents).

Nice. What quantity? What method? If you made it from red P then that does me no good as it is proscribed in the USA.

Sadly, for you, I made it from red P by distilling that into a cold glass tube.
I made a few grams, I do not need more than that. I only use it for some funny spectacular demos and made an element sample by cleaning it, using Endymion's method.
