like button
It would be nice from my point of view for there to be a like button on each post. It would be a gentle way of giving the poster positive feedback
without having to go to the extreme of posting and saying nice with absolutely nothing to add to the thread other than hey guy/gal, thank you for your
post.

Apologies if my post was a bit 'corrosive' (why thank you BTW).
Call me a traditionalist, but if you spend long enough reading the chemistry archives here and elsewhere, you will see that general chit-chat is
frowned upon, and if somebody's post is not informative, constructive and 'complimentary' to the rest of the thread, well then, we don't post.
Sorry for being such a forum Nazi, I only gave my opinion.
Please don't let my first post stop you from posting again. If so, I graciously apologise (again).
Let's see what others have to say. It is a public forum after all.

However, I think that it would require a major upgrade of the forum software.

If you want to sincerely compliment a members work then copy it and report on your results !
If you sincerely want to criticise a members post(s) then provide references
or copy their work and report on your results 
Due to members like me there is already excess chit-chat,
I do not want anything that would detract from the art and science of amateur experimentalism.
Whimsy and U2U are available for trivia.
Scientific validity should not be determined by social status.
Some members here are very clever and can be extremely helpful,
but may have a 'delicate' ego,
I would not like a 'Dislike' option for this reason.

No for two reasons.
It sets up a system where posts are valued (or even ranked) by popularity. This is one of the things that is wrong with the internet and has
contributed greatly to the post-truth, fake-news, kardashian/pewdiepie, lowest denominator, clickbait, king of random world that we currently live in.
We want content valued according to its merit and not its popularity. Those merits are evident to anyone who takes time to read properly - another
thing we value. In summary, a like button rewards the wrong thing.
Secondly, I don't think the board software would support it. And if we are to do changes I would prefer effort go to spam reduction.

im glad there is not support for a like button; they really dont reflect much at all imo. on another site a review i wrote has been read 15000+ times
(measured by users clicking on the "read more" button), so my first para is interesting enough to elicit a click for more information by many people.
so far 2 readers have liked my review.

PLUS: Every single online media with a like / thumbs up or down quickly establishes clans or sides. No reason to divide us more.

Just to play advocate, because no-one else has - I like like and dislike buttons. :-)
I won't bother saying why - but mainly because you can give support to facts and down vote spurious opinions where it is clear. Other reading who
might not know what is real and what is BS can see from the opinions of others whether the writing is worth reading or not.
