but
Thermometers only break when they are in my hand or in clear full view
therefore,
they should be stored hidden.

OK; I'm guessing it was a crayon/pencil holder/marker holder. I made some similar (a large flat-bed truck) that I cut on my scroll saw. I thought I had a clever design, but it never sold at craft shows.:(

This is true. I also bought one for small files, etc. They sold for $15 ea.
