While not chemical order, I thought I would share this lucky find! A perfectly working Thermolyne 13025 four position hot plate / magnetic stirrer for only $40! Thank you Craigslist! All plates heat and stir properly. The stirrer motors are quite noisy, and likely need some lubrication or some other form of tlc, and two knobs are missing, but I'm quite happy with this purchase!

Benzene is carcinogenic, but its toxicity is exaggerated strongly. It is not instant death in a bottle. Acute toxicity is low, comparable with the acute toxicity of toluene.

I consider working with benzene as smoking cigarettes. If you occasionally do an experiment with this and you breathe a small whiff of this a few times and then you don't work with it for years, then I see no issue with it, just as smoking cigarettes a few times does not lead to cancer.

If you work with benzene every day and you breathe a few small whiffs of its vapor every day, then in the long run it may have adverse effects and may induce cancer in your body.

How do you copy with such risks? That is a personal choice. Every action you take in life introduces some risks. Each chemical experiment with toxic chemicals may introduce some risk on illness, but also eating fast food, drinking (too) much alcohol and many other things introduce risks for adverse long term health effects, each time. Of course, you must weigh the risks. Working with benzene a few times in my opinion introduces acceptable risks, working with e.g. arsine introduces unacceptable risks.

In general there is too much chemophobia in our society and even here on sciencemadness I frequently see it when people get afraid of certain chemicals are freak out when they have had a one-time exposure to a small amount of the chemical. Smoking, drinking, painting your house, filling the tank of your car, working with certain artists pigments, and many other things are considered OK, while these things (e.g. vapors) are as harmful as many of the chemicals we are working with in our experiments. Good common sense is your best friend in all these things. Avoid exposure as much as possible (e.g. do not do your experiments with benzene in a small badly ventilated room), but do not exaggerate (e.g. no need to wear a full gas mask when working with benzene for a few times), and certainly be not afraid of the chemicals (if you are, you'd better take another hobby).

Pharmacies are not suitable at all to buy chemicals in the Netherlands. Already quite some years ago, they switched from making drugs and medicines to just selling prepackaged items and registring patient's medication and possible incompatibilities. They have no chemicals anymore, nor simple glassware and bottles and that kind of things. A year ago I tried to buy a plastic bottle for storing a chemical, but I could not buy that, because they do not sell that anymore.

For chemicals you have to go online in the Netherlands. Only the most mundane chemicals can be purchased locally (e.g. Na2CO3, NaHCO3, 10% HCl, NaOH). Even common solvents like acetone, ligroin and white spirit are disappearing now and are replaced by 'green' eco-stuff.

The palladium chloride I ordered just arrived, it does not look at all like palladium chloride, it is brown like anhydrous copper chloride, and not red at all, it does not dissolve in water by the test I have done, heating up to 200 C as no effect at all and it makes a green spectrum in the flame test...

I will have to test more, but I think I was scammed...

there should always be buyer protection on ebay. got to your purchase summary tab in "my ebay", press the "view order details" on the right of the auction in question( even completed ones ). half way down on the right of that page should be the total $ spent, and right below it is "resolve a problem". you should have no problem if there was a shipping time issue and a discrepancy in the product description. don't think they have anything to do with each other.

Of course. You need to have the proper container though... They won't fill a styrofoam cooler or a large thermos. I have a 5 liter dewar which seems to be okay with them. Dry ice they sell to anyone and their dog lol

Just ordered 12 half-gallon and 8 one-gallon wide-mouth glass jars to hold reagents. I usually buy a kilo or two of whatever chemical when I order it, so for many reagents my 32oz jars just don't cut it.

Also picked up a 40x200mm ID dewar condenser, an 8"x8" lab jack, and a bunch more bossheads and clamps. Got some stuff using liquid ammonia coming up soon.

When I was a kid I would nerd out on the Merck Index. My favorite section was the fluorine compounds: fluorine monoxide, chlorine trifluoride, fluorine nitrate... very danger, much reactive! Around this time, there was also a clinical case study of a bad hydrofluoric acid burn in Discover. They sort of captured my imagination; I even had an idea for a scifi story about a spaceship whose reactor starts leaking fluorine, and the crew has to try to seal it, in Teflon mechas.

So, I couldn't not pick this up when I saw it in the grocery store (!):

The service was great! Shipping was no issue and the cost was reasonable (they deal with all the customs fees once you pay the original shipping quote). Tom was also very helpful in addressing any questions/concerns. Definitely going to be ordering from them in the future!

I just ordered 200 mg of C60 (fullerene) from an eBay seller (it is not cheap, this sample cost me EUR 14.70). This is not intended for experiments, but as part of my element collection. I also want to make a sample of C60, dissolved in an organic solvent. Just a fraction of a mg gives a beautiful deep purple color. C60 is one of the allotropes of carbon, which does dissolve in ordinary solvents! When the material arrives, I will make pictures of it and show it here.

This is more about my *first* chemical order.

I started home chemistry with a little lab in the garage, most of the chemicals found around the house or provided by my parents. I remember very clearly the first time I purchased my own chemicals with my own allowance, getting an 8-ounce bottle of sulfur powder from the local general store.

Many years later, I make the bittersweet announcement that that bottle has run out, the last few grams being converted into zinc sulfide.

Time to get more.

Yes, I am a wuss.

The next challenge will be transferring it to my bottle of choice, without my usual lab and equipment(since it is at home), so outside.

Yeah, from a drugstore... it's an 'old-fashioned' drugstore... unique in the country. It was quite a search to get it.

I bought aniline and my grandfather shocked me with an old bottle of carbon tetrachloride! It was given to him by a friend many years ago to clean finger prints off the windows in his house... The friend worked in some kind of print shop. He was going to chuck it in the trash and decided to ask me if I wanted it, it's only maybe 300ml but CCl4 nonetheless

Some technical stock from an online pottery store. I like buying carbonates, because it is easy to dissolve them into various acids, filter out the crap, and then crystallize. It is then easy to get the reasonably pure nitrate, chloride, sulfate, acetate, bromide, etc salts on demand, for very cheap. All quantities in pounds.

today I got 25g Se(ebay) and a cryocool CC-100 II immersion cooler(obviously not ebay).

graphite crucible, full face shield/respirator and 2x small UV shield quartz tubes(doped to block UV for aquarium, only 99¢ea) on the way.

have to say the Se came unsatisfactorily packed. non-padded USPS envelop, with a paper folded in half and taped on the border as an envelope, with a double ziplocked bag inside. seemed like a great way to send finely powdered selenium? any sharp object could have impaled in one side and out the other. it didn't really look like the bag inside the other was wrapped neatly, just kinda shoved in...

Not a reagent but I found this at an antique store. The woman sold it for 3$ and called it a "smoking lamp" fml. I don't even know what to use it for... Distilling or steam generating, I guess. Although I have better things to do both of those. Oh well! Score nonetheless

I ordered a few new chemicals, some of them really special:

10g CoF₃ (expensive, but allows me to make small amounts of elemental F₂, by heating this chemical)
100g C₂Cl₆ (did not yet have this, is cheap, just over EUR 4)
100g Ni(ClO₄)₂.6H₂O (did not yet have this, is cheap, just over EUR 7)
10g WCl₆ (expensive stuff, but VERY interesting, maybe allows me to make a blue gas, if this succeeds then pictures will follow on my website)
1g Eu₂O₃ (nice fluorescence sample)
10g Ho₂O₃ (interesting for doing lanthanide experiments)
20g PBr₅ (very nice colorful sample for weird compounds collection, in glass ampoule)
20g As (very nice sample for element collection, in glass ampoule)

All together less than 300 grams, but really worth the money. Especially the CoF₃, WCl₆, PBr₅ and As are very interesting to my opinion (and these also make up over 80% of the cost of this order).

Ok. I have to ask. How do you propose to store the F2? Or are you going to use it straight away for something?

I do not store F2. I just want to see it (and make pictures of it) and try some things with it, like throwing Al-powder in it (which is supposed to give bright flashes of light).

The experiments are on a test tube scale, not more, I just ordered 10 grams (CoF3 is EXPENSIVE, appr. $25 per 10 grams!), so the amounts of F2 made will be small and the safety issues only are moderate.

The same shop also sells pure very finely powdered SO3 (in a glass ampoule, 70 ... 80 grams), but this is so corrosive and extreme that I let it go. It also is very expensive, appr. $150 for 75 grams or so.

That's what we used as a distillation flask in the old days before the advent of RBFs and ground glassware. I have one but never use it.

Weird. Xylene is at one small local store. MEK I need to buy at a special local store or a lab supplier. I find it so strange that one Canadian Tire sells it vs others. I wonder what determining factors decide if or if not it will be in store.

Yea, I was wondering the same thing. I have seen all those reagents on the shelves at Canadian Tire at one point or another, but it's always changing, with no apparent pattern. I haven't seen MEK in a while though... Does anyone know why they seem to be slowly phasing it out?
