3,4-Dicyanofuroxane (DCFO)

Ritter - 23-7-2008 at 06:55

US3832249 discloses the preparation & use of DCFO as a safe, castable explosive for use in shaped explosives such as shaped charges & EFPs. Detonation occurs via a blasting cap.

It is said to be 'extremely stable & safe, and insensitive to heat (below its boiling point of 200 deg) & insensitive to impact'.

While the synthesis details are a little sketchy, they seem fairly straightforward. See attached ChemDraw. The reaction goes to near completion in a few hours. The acidic fraction is then extracted with CHCl3 or DCM. The solvent is then removed using vacuum. Nothing is mentioned about adjusting the pH before isolating the DCFO.

That's a 1974 patent to Avro.

Has this explosive ever been marketed commercially? Adopted by the military?

If not, why not?

Surely one of our boom-boffins will know.

I thought it odd that it is so easy to prepare & has such unique characteristics yet had not been discussed here.

40°C melting point by itself is too low, performance 85% of TNT and a whole lot more expensive.

Interesting none the less, and some of its derivatives look attractive as well. I'll attach the abstracts from scifindr.

I've previously posted the preparation of nitrocyanofuroxan from citric acid in the thread on diisonitrosoacetone. It also has a low melting point 48-49°C and far higher performance, calculated at near 9000m/s.

The following should give the prep of DCFO from diaminofurazan, more attractive to the amateur then cyanoacetic acid and tetrachloroacetic acid. I dont have access to it.

Please attach that patent here as a PDF. I cannot find it on www.patentstorm.us or www.freepatentsonline.com .
